Part-time jobs for physicians are growing
Physicians are increasingly finding work in fields where the typical workweek is 60 or more hours. Part-time means working less than 40 hours per week. According to the Cejka Search/American Medical Group Management Retention Survey, part-time doctors made up 21% of the physician workforce in 2010, up from 13% in 2005. That percentage increased to 31% of survey respondents identifying as part-time in 2012.
The numbers could rise even further
The report titled “A Survey of America’s Physicians: In the 2014 study, “Practice Patterns and Perspectives,” conducted by the Physicians Foundation, respondents were asked if they planned to alter their work over the next three years. More than 18% said they would reduce their hours (not necessarily to part-time, but perhaps to full-time hours that are easier to manage), 9% said they would switch from full-time permanent to locum tenens, and more than 6% said they would go part-time, adding more doctors to the part-time workforce.

Some locum tenens physicians choose to work only part-time. While still working full-time, some choose to work as a locum tenens full-time to gain flexibility and work more set shifts. Some people do it part-time so they can work on other paying interests related to healthcare.
In the past, locum tenens was often used by older doctors to continue working but at a slower pace. This is still the case for many doctors, including cardiologist Dr. Michael Higginbotham.
